Oh acne, hearing your name still triggers me. It’s been a few months since I’ve been off Accutane and I have to say, it’s been a dream having clear skin again. I haven’t seen my skin without angry red pimples across my face in nearly 3 years. I guess I’ve just rocked my acne for so long that I forgot what it felt like to feel comfortable in my own skin. And it pains me to say… I owe it all to Accutane.
I know people have their own opinions about the drug and how dangerous it can be to take it but it was truly my last resort. I’ve spent years trying to clear my skin with other alternatives whether it be a natural and holistic way or with other topical creams and prescriptions. Nothing EVER worked. It consumed my life to the point where I hated leaving the house, I just wanted to feel confident again. So I did my research and took the big step with my Dermatologist. I was warned of all the side effects I could possibly experience and thankfully enough, the only side effect I experienced was dry skin… Dry skin like never before.
I live in Toronto and we experience bitterly cold winters, but pretty hot summers. So I was blessed when I started taking Accutane in May. My dry skin was surprisingly manageable – I think it had to do with the humidity. But when my skin started clearing up there was nothing I wanted more than a natural looking base.
Now we’re getting into the fun stuff. I dropped the salicylic acid and drying lotions and really embraced the hydrated look. I was obsessed with looking like a Glossier model and wanted my face to glow to the point of no return. Avene’s Hyrda Cleanance Moisturizer was and still is my life saver. It’s meant for hydrating dry and irritated skin undergoing anti-acne treatments (it’s perfect I know). The lines Eau Thermale water is a key ingredient in it and it stopped all my flakiness. It’s forever my number one recommendation for anyone with dry skin.
People who know me know I’ve raved about this product time and time again. As the months went on my skin got more and more clear, however, I was left with all these pesky red marks. It was the bain of my existence that wouldn’t fade so I trialled Caudalie’s Radiance Serum and 1oz later… I was shook. It really makes your skin look like you just had a facial every time you used it and the acne marks… They were just about gone! I can’t wait to see what my skin looks like after I finish this second bottle.
One thing my dermatologist would ask me every time I went for my monthly check-up was “are you wearing SPF?” and proudly enough, I actually was. I was always so bad with wearing SPF before but I knew I really had to stay on top of it while taking Accutane because if I didn’t… I would fry. The It Cosmetics CC Cream is one of the only bases I’ve tested that truly looks like skin and the SPF 50 is the cherry on top… Must. Maintain. Babyface.
Lastly, facial mists. I would use facial mists any time I could whether it be after cleansing, setting my makeup or throughout the day. A few I loved over the months and still use are Glossier’s Soothing Face Mist, Mario Badescu’s Rose Water Spray, and Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir. They all have amazing soothing properties and really helped to quench my dry skin. It’s my favourite beauty product to use to get dewy looking skin.
